Record a game

Post by Cynyx »

Better than screenshots... In Half Life, it's possible to record a game for a replay later, just type in console :

Code: Select all

record FILE_YOU_WANT
You can play the record with the following command :

Code: Select all

playdemo FILE_YOU_WANT

Recorded files are in the following directory :
YOUR_INSTALLED_DIR\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\YOUR_STEAM_ACCOUNT_NAME\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp\

They have the extension .dem and long time demo are splitted in many small files (name with numbers)...

To remove a demo, just remove the files in this directory. Perhaps, there is a console command, but I don't know it.

It will be really cool if we share our demo of some good games.
Another thing, i want to do some video-clip to illustrated members, gameplay, stunt or others funny things.

The problem for the moment is that i don't know how to change the point of view when i'm playing a video. Console seems to be disabled in that mode :(

I dont think u can change the point of view.. It will always be first person, because it just records what u have seen... Another thing is to record videos of somebody else being a Spectator.. you can fly anywhere and look from any direction...

Gamecam is the next step. First you record the game with the Source Engine... and after the game you play the recorded demo with Gamecam enabled. It's a good way to encode the video without any lost of performance during the game coz the encoding process take some CPU. Another advantage of the .dem file is the size : less than a video... So to share them is more efficient.

It's not true... I've seen a video from console with another point of view...
